Vertical Borer or Vertical Turning Lathe?

The vertical borer, also known as a vertical turning lathe (VTL), is used to bore holes in metals, usually steel or iron. Just the same as a horizontal lathe, the workpiece is kept stationary whilst the boring bits rotate at high speed via the head.

When accurate boring is required, CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) borers are generally used as they allow for greater accuracy.

Below is Electro Motion's (Stock No. J27627) Schiess, 2 axis, CNC, double column vertical borer. It has a 3500mm table that has a table load of 30 tonnes and is fitted with the Seimens Sinumerik 840C control. Full machine details can be found here.
